Employment Fund targets people living in poverty

The Employment Fund — a multi-donor employment initiative — has launched two new programmes targeting people living under extreme poverty and seeking employment opportunities.

The programmes — Entrepreneurship for Employment Creation, and Training for Extreme Poor and People with Special Needs — are aimed at training 2,000 youths across the country.

The fund has decided to launch 'Training for Extreme Poor and People with Special Needs' for 1,200 youths. People from all walks of lives can participate in the training, said communication officer at the fund Komal Bhatta. "Street children, women suffering from violence, freed bonded labour, labour, and landless people are our target group," he said.

About two dozen training programmes including electric, auto mechanical, and mobile phone repair have been planned for them. "We are giving priority to those identified as poor by the Poverty Alleviation Fund," said Bhatta, adding that people from 29 districts, mostly eastern and regional districts, have been targeted for the programme.

Similarly, the 'Entrepreneurship for Employment Creation' will be launched in 22 districts of the eastern and central regions. "About 800 people eager to start their own business will be our potential trainees," he said. Under the provision, the trainee has to employ at least one youth in his/her business. The trainees will also get entrepreneur skill training, he added.

The Employment Fund trained about 60,000 youths between 2008 and 2012, and 50,000 of them are employed in the domestic and international market. This year, the fund is providing training to 17,000 youths. The fund is executed by Helvetas Nepal and supported by Swiss Development Cooperation, UKAids and the World Bank.
