Eighty migrant workers stranded in Dubai

Around 80 Nepali migrant workers have reportedly been stranded in Dubai after they were denied work and salary as per the contract.

The migrant workers had flown to Abudhabi through the Itahari-based ‘The River Overseas’ manpower company about two months ago.

Family members of Prayas Rijal from Itahari, Sunsari, said they learnt that Rijal was stranded after he called home. “He had only left two months ago and now he calls and says he is spending the nights on the street,” lamented Rijal’s mother Tika, adding, they have reported the same to the concerned manpower company, but nothing has been done.

The stranded lot had flown to work at Abudhabi National Hotel in March for Rs 22,000 per month, but according to a few youths who returned home, they worked with that salary for only one month.

“After a month we were shifted to a new company — ADNS — where we were neither provided work nor salary as per the contract,” said Gangaram Khanal of Udayapur.

River Overseas section manager Pramod Bartaula denied the workers it sent were stranded. “We had sent the youths to work at ADNS company and all of them are getting paid as per the contract,” he claimed.
