Crackdown on illegal foreign workers futile

Despite the government move to crackdown on illegal foreign workers in the country, only a few foreign workers have come forward to register themselves this year. According to the Department of Labour, 358 foreign nationals have received work permits in the first eight months of the current fiscal year.

Number of foreigners seeking job permits has not increased as the drive has not received support from international agencies, private schools/colleges and private firms. We did not receive support from concerned agencies, said a middle level officer at the department.

The department started a crackdown on illegal foreign workers after it estimated 40,000 illegal workers in the country. According to the department, most foreign workers are on tourist visas which does not permit them to work.

The labour law of the country bars foreign nationals from working in the country without taking a job permit from the department. However, diplomats and top-level officers of INGOs, appointed by their respective agencies, are exempted from this law.
