Conference on migrant workers concludes

The two-day international conference on cooperation between national human rights Institutions for promotion and protection of the Rights of Migrant Workers concluded today with the Kathmandu Declaration.

The conference dealt with the condition of migrant workers in the receiving, sending and transit countries and examined the existing protection framework. It felt a strong need to establish a relevant cooperation mechanism taking into account existing national, regional and international human rights mechanisms, including those under the mandate of the United Nations.
 
The conference adopted 10 principal areas of cooperation and plan of action, which said the government must monitor the situation of migrants in each country and develop a strategy to strengthen remedies, establish bilateral or multilateral framework of cooperation to protect and promote the rights of the migrant workers among NHRIs of Asia Pacific Region through mutual cooperation, exchange of information and joint action.
