Children heading for work rescued

Police and rights activists today rescued five children of Rolpa who were heading to the Capital to work as labourers at some brick kiln.

The children have been identified as 16-year-old Nanda Kumar Oli, Lalita Oli, Dhana Kumari KC, 17-year-old Sapana KC and 15-year-old Asmita Oli of Bhawang. They were detained from a commuter bus en-route to Kathmandu at Liwang.

“As there have been many instances in the past when children going out to work from Rolpa have fallen victim to sex abuse and child labour, we prevented the children from going to other cities for work,” said District Children Welfare officer Gokarna Pun. According to Women Rights Protection Network Chairperson Shree Kumari Roka Magar, hundreds of children from the district leave their home to work at the brick klins every year, either willingly or due to poverty.
