Big firms employ less than 300‚000 people

The industrial sector has been shrinking in the country due to insecurity, energy crisis and labour problems. The showdown in entrepreneurship development in the country has directly affected employment.

According to the Department of Labour, big industries — those that employ more than 10 people — have been providing jobs to just 280,271 people in the country. It calculated the number on the basis of the contribution made in the Social Security Fund. The fund has a contribution of more than Rs three billion from workers.
However, employers and government have not paid their part of the contribution. Employers have been asking for adequate laws before they make any contribution to the fund, while the government has not decided about its contribution.
We have found that there are less than 300,000 people working in private enterprises, said director general at department Kebal Prasad Bhandari. The Department’s data reveals there are more than 72 per cent organised sector workers in Bagmati.
The second highest employer zone is Narayani (20,378), followed by Koshi (19,004), Lumbini (10,634) and Mechi (10,023). The lowest number of private sector workers are in Seti zone where just 2,068 people are employed. Narayani has two offices of the department — in Birgunj and Hetauda.
Bagmati has the highest number of industries or enterprises. According to it, 6,979 private sector organisations are in operation in the zone. Similarly, about 791 business enterprises are registered in Narayani, 319 in Koshi and 201 in Lumbini.
