Bahrain to grant amnesty to illegal workers

HOM KARKI

The Bahrain government has announced that it will provide six-month grace period to illegal migrant workers living in the country to return home. The general amnesty will start from July 1. The decision has provided relief to undocumented foreign workers, including Nepalis.

The Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) of Bahrain has indicated that the amnesty will be granted to runaway workers and those who worked with expired or cancelled work permits.
The LMRA said the amnesty is being provided so as to allow illegal workers to either leave the country without having to pay penalty or validate their visas for staying in Bahrain.

“We have arranged the provision so that illegal migrants can use the general amnesty without having to face legal action or pay penalty,” said LMRA Chief Executive Ausamah Al Absi. He said illegal workers have been provided options to either find employers who are willing to recruit them or to leave the country after finalising their document.

Authorities in Bahrain informed Nepal government and its diplomatic missions of the decision on Sunday.
