Amnesty demands justice for Nepali women victimized by Saudi diplomat

Amnesty International India has demanded justice for the two Nepali women who were sexually assaulted by their employer, a Saudi diplomat, in Gurgaon of India, about two months ago.

Issuing a press statement on Thursday, Amnesty said that it has started a campaign and petitioned Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding justice for the two Nepali domestic workers who were repeatedly sexually assaulted by the Saudi Diplomat. The two women were rescued by the Indian Police in coordination with Maiti-India from the Gurgaon apartment of the Saudi Arabian diplomat on September 9 and brought to Nepal.

Amnesty has urged the Indian and Saudi Arabian authorities to work together to deliver justice and reparation for the two Nepali women.

“However, the Saudi Arabian Embassy based in New Delhi has refuted the allegations, complaining instead that the entry of police into the diplomat's home breached diplomatic conventions,” the statement issued by Amnesty read.

The Saudi Arabian diplomat has already returned to his home country.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs said that the diplomat was protected by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. “Diplomatic immunity must not lead to impunity for human rights abuses,” the statement quoted Gopika Bashi, Women's Rights Campaigner at Amnesty International India, as saying.

The organization has also sought the extradition of the suspects from Saudi Arabia for prosecution and has urged the Saudi government to not to use the shield of diplomatic immunity to protect the accused.

The two victim migrant workers have taken shelter at a home in Kathmandu and are receiving psychological counseling. Both the victims have refused to go back to their respective villages fearing social stigma.
