Afghan ordeal ends; Nepali workers back

Ten Nepali migrant workers who were freed from manpower agents’ captivity in Bagram in Afghanistan finally arrived home on Sunday evening.

Ramananda Rai, Jitendra Gurung, Binesh Tamang, Shiva Kumar Rai, Lil Bahadur Kafle, Janak Dhakal, Dhan Bahadur Gurung, Subas Chandra Rai, Rajendra Rai, and Sasan Thapa were welcomed at the Tribhuvan International Airport by Dilip Poudel, an official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) and representatives of Pourakhi Nepal, an NGO working for migrant workers.

Some manpower agents had taken the workers to the war-torn country with promises of lucrative jobs. However, once in the country, they were not given the jobs and were locked up in a Bagram-based guesthouse for 10 months.

The workers thanked MoFA, the Nepali Embassy in Pakistan and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) for rescuing them.

According to MoFA official Poudel, the workers will visit the Ministry and Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE) and file cases against the manpower agents that took them to Afghanistan.

Upon a formal request from the MoFA, the IOM and the Interior Ministry of Afghanistan rescued the workers, while the Nepali Embassy in Pakistan arranged the travel documents for them.
