Address migrants problems: PM to envoys

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, who is currently in Oman on an official visit, has asked Nepali ambassadors to the Gulf and African countries to step up efforts to protect Nepali migrant workers in the region.

Stating that the government is serious about the migrant workers’ issues, the PM told the ambassador to make best possible efforts to address their problems during an interaction in the Omani capital Muscat on Tuesday evening, according to the Nepali Embassy in Oman. 

Speaking at the programme, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Krishna Bahadur Mahara directed the ambassadors to uplift Nepal’s prestige and dignity from the diplomatic channel and give due priority to economic diplomacy. 

Minister for Labour and Employment Farmullah Mansoor asked the ambassadors to issue re-approval of labour permit and authentication of documents from the Nepali embassies in the countries concerned.

On the occasion, the ambassadors stressed the need for better coordination among the Ministries of Home, Foreign Affairs, and Labour and Employment to address the problems facing the Nepali migrant workers. 

They also called on the PM and DPM to reinforce the embassies in the region by allocating more resources and recruiting local staff having command over local languages and laws. 

Nepal’s Ambassador to Oman Sharmila Parajuli, Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Mahendra Singh, Ambassador to Qatar Ramesh Koirala, Ambassador to Israel Niranjan Thapa, Ambassador to South Africa Amrit Rai were among those present on the occasion.
