Workers' strike TIA ends

Workers ended their strike at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) and other aviation-related establishments in Kathmandu on Tuesday after airport management agreed to revise service fees paid to service providers so that workers´ demand can be met.

Chudamani Bhatta, coordinator of airport area main committee of All Nepal Trade Union Federation, said workers resumed work from 10 am Tuesday after the agreement was sealed. “The agreement will become official on Wednesday when Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) gives us an official letter,” Bhatta said.
Some 540 workers had gone on strike from Monday morning demanding monthly dearness allowance of Rs 1,200 and a month´s extra salary as festival expense.

Cleaners, trolley collectors, and drivers, among others, supplied by service providers with which CAAN has entered into contracts turned up for work Monday but did not carry out their responsibilities. The strike affected Tribhuvan International Airport, the domestic terminal, CAAN building, Babarmahal, and Air Cargo Division, Gairigaon, among other places.

The workers had gone on strike after service providers said they could not meet the workers´ demands under the existing service fee payment agreement with CAAN.

But with TIA management agreeing on behalf of CAAN to upwardly revise service fee, service providers can now be able to meet the workers´ demands.
