Refugee women call off strike

Chetan Adhikari

Bhutanese refugee women, who were staging a fast-onto-death in front of the Camp Management Office in Jhapa’s Beldangi since Tuesday, called off their protest on Saturday.

The agitators, who had put forth a number of demands, called off the protest after authorities concerned pledged to fulfil their demands.

According to an agreement signed by Acting Chief District Officer Yogendra Prasad Dulal and coordinator of the agitating group Durga Devi Bistha on Saturday, the demands will be addressed within five months. They were demanding, among other things, immediate relief for refugee women without identity cards and refugee status for female refugees who married non-refugee men.

Secretary of the Jhapa Human Rights Network Laxmi Niraula said a committee was formed to monitor whether or not the commitment was implemented. “We doubt implementation of the commitment. We will pressurise the local administration to implement it,” she said. Dulal said the local administration has forwarded their demands to the Home Ministry.
