Malaysia returnee in dire need of help

Roshan Shedhai

Shyam Kumar Shrestha of Gorkha went to Malaysia thinking that he would bring fortune to his family. But the 27-year-old’s dream met a sticky end after an accident left him disabled.

He sustained serious injury in his right leg while working for PCD Cargo Company of Malaysia. Following an unsuccessful operation in Malaysia over nine months ago, Shrestha visited various hospitals in Nepal and India, only to get steel plate fixed in his leg that put him on back foot whenever he tries to walk without a crutch.

“I spent more than 5 lakhs in treatment, but there is no significant change in my condition. The doctor says the steel plate inside my leg was too big and long. They say inner muscles and bones have started rotting,” said Shrestha, who hails from a poor family. “My family our sold land for my treatment.
There is nothing left to sell now besides the house. Some of my friends and neighbours are helping me these days.”

Shrestha says he was cheated by the person who sent him abroad, as he wasn’t paid the promised salary.  “I was told they would pay 1,250 Malaysian Ringgit, but they just gave me only 600.” He was sent by Gita Thapa, whom he met through his personal contacts. The cargo company he was working for had no insurance policy.

“I went there through the personal agent. As the company gave me no insurance card, getting medical assistance was beyond imagination,” said Shrestha.

Doctors say Shrestha is young and his bones can grow if a new steel plate is attached. Costs of operation and replacement of a steel plate, however, is beyond Shrestha’s capacity.

His family is worried about his future. He is currently taking refuge in his sister home with the a hope of getting a new lease of life. The anxious family has appealed for support. Anybody willing to help him can contact him at 9849360938.
