Government resumes labour attaché process

Ministry of Labour and Transport Management has restarted labour attaché appointment process after one year.

Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority had stopped the process in March 16, 2010 following reports of appointment of unsuitable candidates to the posts.

Appointment of labour attaché in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Israel, Oman and Kuwait restarted, an officer at the ministry, said, adding that they have formed a committee to suggest appropriate candidate for labour attaché on the basis of criteria.

The ministry has set four points criterion for the candidate of labour attaché like they must be a gazette officer having at least one experience in the Labour Ministry or Department of Foreign Employment with good command in English language, and knowledge of additional language spoken in destination countries. “Those not fulfilling criterion will not be considered for labour attaché,” he said.

In earlier appointments, the ministry had neglected the criteria and four out of six labour attachés were neither from the department nor the ministry, sparking doubts on the appointments.

The government is appointing labour attaché under Foreign Employment Act 2007 in the destination countries.
