Down and out, worker returns

Dinesh Regmi

A Nepali migrant worker, who is taking shelter in the Nepali embassy in Qatar after getting into trouble for possessing a fake passport, is returning home on Friday.

Maniraj Gurung went to the Gulf country with the passport of one Chitra Bahadur Gharti one-and-a-half-years ago.
Gurung sought help from the embassy around 14 months ago after he got into trouble. In an application to the embassy, Gurung said an agent named Jitu Rauniyar sent him to Qatar using Gharti’s passport by charging him Rs 95,000 and he was received by another agent named Mahendra Bhandari here. “Jitu told me that I would not get into trouble while going to Qatar with the passport of another man,” Gurung said, adding that he was left in the lurch after he reached Qatar as his own passport, too, was used by Bhandari to send another man to a foreign country.
Gurung, however, was proven innocent after the embassy asked the company concerned to provide return documents to Gurung as his passport was used by Bhandari for another man.
The embassy has also urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Labour and Transport Management to help the victim get compensation and take action against the guilty.
