UK embassy confirms downsizing of Gurkha brigade

Around 140 Gurkhas have been selected for redundancy as a part of British defence restructuring on Thursday.

According to a press statement released by British Embassy in Nepal today, the redundancy plan was announced by the British Army after a thorough review as a part of a plan to reduce its strength by 7000 to 93000 by 2015.

“All redundancies will be given 12 months notice and a period of resettlement into civilian life,” reads the statement.

The statement further stated that the Brigade of Gurkhas has grown in size since terms and conditions were amended in 2007 to allow soldiers to serve for a longer period.

However, it has also said that the Brigade would continue to recruit new soldiers in Nepal.
