Eighty-five women, who left for foreign employment from Dang district in the past three years, are suspected to have been sold there, a report made public by the Nepal Family Planning Association said.

According to the study carried out in eight VDCs including Gobardiha, Lalmatiya, Sisahaniya, Chailahi, Satabariya, Syuja, Pabannagar and Shantinagar, the suspected victims were in the age group 16 to 35 years and trafficked to India and Gulf countries by agents on the pretext of marriage and foreign employment.

Field supervisor of the association, Nisha Shah said most of the women who go to India from Deukhuri in search of jobs through agents and are sold there. “Women, lured with good employment opportunities, are trafficked to foreign countries through agents and end up as sex workers there,” she said. “Women trafficking is on the rise. In many cases, other women are involved in the business,” said law practitioner Madan Pokharel.
He said culprits were evading arrest owing to victims’ reluctance to file complaints, lack of evidence against them and lack of awareness among victims of where to complain. He added cumbersome legal process is another reason for the victims’ reluctance to file complaints.
