75 Nepali workers go to Qatar court

 Hom Karki

Denied salary for 11 months by their employer, 75 Nepali migrant workers in Qatar have moved to a high court in the Gulf emirate. The Nepalis, who had been working for a government project, stopped reporting for work two months ago.

“We worked to complete the project after the project manager assured our salary, and this despite the fact that our company manager was sent to jail over cheques that bounced,” one of the victims, Shyam Bishwokarma of Sunsari, said.

Jobless for two months now, the workers are struggling to make ends meet in a foreign land.

“Our friends have been helping us for the past two months,” Bishwokarma said. The fact that their sponsor is now out of contact has added to their problems.

Acting Nepali Ambassador to Qatar Ganesh Dhakal said the embassy has taken the matter seriously.

“Our efforts will be to send the workers back home after they are given their salary,” he said.

He added that the embassy has started a process to look for jobs for the Nepalis with the help of temporary sponsors in coordination with the Qatari National Human Rights Committee.

Dhakal said that the embassy has urged the Qatari Foreign Ministry to look into the problems of the workers.
