6 held over women trafficking in two weeks

The Metropolitan Police Crime Division arrested four men from various places in Nepal on suspicion that they were involvement in trafficking women to Gulf countries via Indian routes.

Initial investigations of the police have revealed that the alleged traffickers were found to be operating from eastern Nepal for the past few years. They had been using Kakadvitta border point to sneak women into India and then to the Gulf countries via New Delhi and Mumbai.

The four were arrested from Jhapa, Sunsari and Morang on the basis of information provided by two women who were arrested last Thursday from Koteshwar, Kathmandu.

The two women--Bina Tamang and Bal Kumari BK--were arrested from a Kakadvitta bound microbus.

The two women, who had been living in Machhapokhari of Balaju, told the police that the smuggling racket was operating from eastern Nepal and people from Nepal, India and the Gulf countries were part of the racket.

The four detained on Sunday have been identified as Nabin Dhimal of Jhapa, Jiban Urau of Sunsari and Ashok Tamang and Rup Narayan Rajbanshi of Morang, according to DSP Mukunda Marasini of Metropolitan Police Crime Division, Teku, Kathmandu.

According to DSP Marasini, the two women arrested earlier were trafficking four women to Kuwait, promising them lucrative jobs in the Gulf countries.

As per the police, the alleged traffickers had received Rs 250,000 per women and additional money to cover the costs related to making of passport, transportation and residential expenses, among others.

The traffickers had planned to take the women to Delhi and hand them over to Indian handlers, DSP Marasini said.

The police also said that they were also questioning the six arrested to find out of they were involved in smuggling other women in the past. The four rescued women were unaware about the country they were being taken to, according to the police investigation.
