362 child workers repatriated from capital

Three hundred sixty-two domestic helps serving well-off families in the capital have been repatriated in the last 11 months, a child right organization said.

Officials at the Children-Women in Social Service and Human Rights (CWISH) said that most of the domestic helps rescued from the capital were underaged and had been deprived of their basic rights. Due to poor financial condition of their families, a lot of children have been compelled to work as domestic helps. The organization said that most of the children rescued in the last 11 months have reunited with their families.

"We do not only rescue children but also support their studies," Pradeep Dongol, a child right officer at CWISH, said, adding, "Over 80 percent children are enrolled in school in their respective districts."

Dongol informed that rescued children were from 43 districts, with most of them from Sindhupalchowk, Ramechhap and Kavrepalanchowk districts.

He also claimed that the organization monitors the condition of repatriated children and provides them additional support if needed. He said that some of the rescued children, who are reluctant to resume school, have been getting vocational trainings.

"Those who are not interested in studies have been getting vocational trainings," he added. The organization claims that it has been supporting the families of the children who have a very poor financial background.

"We motivate children to study, help in their studies and provide financial support to their families as well," he claimed.
