3 held for trying to traffick girl to India

Khilanath Dhakal

Police have arrested three persons who were allegedly attempting to sell a girl off to an Indian brothel. The girl had helped the police nab the three.

The three persons posing as recruitment agents were planning to take Roshanidevi Rajbanshi of Shantichowk, Biratnagar to India promising her a job in Kuwait.

They were arrested after it turned out that Devimaya Bhandari of Sunsari district and Renuka Rai and Sunil Karki of Biratnagar were not foreign employment agents but human traffickers.

"I wanted to earn a lot of money quickly. I was thinking that they would fly me to Kuwait and land a good job. But they had other plans for me. Thank God, I was rescued," Rajbanshi said.

Rajbanshi would not have been rescued had had she not applied for a citizenship certificate as suggested by her agent. Agent Shrestha asked her to make a citizenship certificate to show to border officials that she was indeed going for foreign employment.

"She wanted me to make a citizenship certificate. And for that she even managed a ´fake husband´ who would attest my identity," said Rajbanshi.

According to her, Bhandari, Rai and Karki offered to help her in the process. However, the municipality officials were not convinced.

SP Uma Prasad Chaturvedi said all the three are human traffickers. "Our investigation shows that the three are involved in trafficking Nepali women to Indian brothels," he said. "We will take necessary action against them."
