20 jailed illegal Nepalis rescued in Malaysia

Twenty illegal Nepali migrant workers who were jailed by the Malaysian authorities have been rescued by the Nepali Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

The embassy on Tuesday said the rescued workers had been languishing at the immigration detention centre in Negeri Sembilan for the past several months. Digi Telecommunications has funded the air fare for their return home, the embassy said.

The embassy has helped 521 illegal workers return home with the assistance of the government and various organisations in the past 18 months.

Malaysia is one of the major job destinations for Nepalis. Of an estimated 2.1 million migrants working in Malaysia, 500,000 are Nepali migrants.
