15,000 Nepalis eligible for jobs in South Korea

Over 15,000 Nepali youths are likely to land jobs in South Korea as they have passed the Korean language test conducted under the Employment Permit System (EPS).

According to the results published on Tuesday, a total of 15,298 youths passed the test. Of them, 13,298 youths will get jobs in the production sector whereas 2,000 will be employed in the agriculture sector in South Korea. Altogether 50,043 youths had appeared in the test conducted on July 22 and 23.

“The names of all the youths passing the test will be listed. They will be called by Korean companies whenever they need workers,” said Krishna Hari Pushkar Karna, Assistant Spokesperson for the Ministry of Labor, adding, “All of them will go to South Korea at the earliest.”

South Korea had sanctioned 7,100 quotas for Nepali youths under the EPS this year. South Korea added some 8,000 quotas -- first 3,000 and then 5,000 -- for Nepal later. Last year, only 4,000 quotas were given to Nepal.

A Nepali worker in South Korea earns around Rs 70,000 every month. South Korea has been hiring Nepali workers under the EPS as per the agreement signed with Nepal on July 23, 2007.

Although the results of the test were published on Tuesday afternoon, Korean job aspirants have not been able to find what fate has in store for them.

“It takes some hours for the results to get uploaded on websites,” Karna told Republica. “I hope they will get to see the results after 8 pm.
