10 Nepali laborers die in Uttarakhand landslide

At least 10 Nepali laborers died when they were buried by a landslide in India’s Uttarakhand state on Sunday night.

The accident happened at Chetra village, 150 kilometers away from the Dehradun district headquarters, at around 2 am, reports said.

Authorities recovered bodies of 10 Nepal-origin laborers on Monday afternoon after they were buried under boulders in a landslide the night before during a heavy storm, according to a report in India’s Hindustan Times newspaper.

Sixteen laborers had taken shelter under the boulders but got trapped when a landslide dislodged the rocks.

“All the bodies were recovered after a more than five hours-long rescue operation by the local police and disaster management rescue and search teams. Victims were from Nepal and worked as road construction workers. They were buried under the landslide debris that included heavy boulders triggered by a tempest and storm late Sunday at around 2 am,” the newspaper quoted Tyuni sub-divisional magistrate Premlal as saying.
