National Human Rights Commission, in a bid to prevent possible human trafficking under the guise of foreign employment and to ensure human rights of migrant workers, is set to hold an ‘International Conference on Protection of Rights of Migrant Workers’ from November 12 to 14 in Kathmandu.

The NHRC has invited, migration experts, activists and stakeholders from more than a dozen countries to participate in the conference.

The rights conference will be attended by Carlos Alfonso Negret Mosquera, chair of Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions.

Representatives of Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, South Africa, Qatar, Bangladesh, India, Thailand, Saudi Arab, Kuwait, and Bahrain, among others, will attend the conference according to the NHRC.

Delegates of International Labour Organisation, International Organisation for Migration and United Nation Development Programme will also attend the program.

The NHRC Commissioner Sudip Pathak during a press meet today said the conference would deliberate on five major issues related to migrant workers such as migration governance and the rights of migrant workers, promoting practice of fair and responsible recruitment, issues on illegal migration, ensuring access to justice for migrant workers, and cooperation in protection and promotion of rights of Migrant Workers.

The conference would help ensure safety of migrant workers, according to Pathak.
