Swarna Kumar Jha holds a Master’s degree in sociology from Tribhuvan University (TU), Kathmandu, Nepal. He has been involved in various research studies, such as ‘The rural livelihoods and the climate change adaptations in the Himalayas’ and ‘Analysis of local enterprise & community development activities & its relation with migration’, both conducted by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and CESLAM. In addition, Swarna has also worked on ‘Disaster, disability, and difference’, conducted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Social Science Baha (SSB), ‘Migration of health workers from Nepal’, commissioned by the International Labour Organisation's European Union-funded South Asia Labour Migration Governance project and CESLAM.

He was also extensively involved in research for the ‘Social inclusion Atlas and ethnographic profile project’ undertaken by the Central Department of Sociology/Anthropology, at TU and funded by the Social Inclusion Research Fund (SIRF), where he assisted the team leaders in creating a detailed ethnographic profile of the Chamar community. His primary research interests include social exclusion/inclusion and migration.
