Employment fund creates 44‚000 jobs in four years

At a time when unemployment has compelled the youth to migrate to foreign job destinations due to lack of opportunities in the domestic job market, the Employment Fund has created 44,000 jobs in the country since 2008.

About 80 per cent of 55,028 — 29,614 females and 25,414 males — Nepalis trained by the fund have been successful in getting jobs in the domestic market, an impact study of the fund read. Employment Fund has been a success because it provides training that focuses on employment, said deputy team leader of the fund Balram Poudel.

“We select trainings that are helpful in providing jobs to trainees,” he said. “We provide 81 different trainings according to the market demand.” According to Poudel, the fund selects private training institutes to provide trainings and pay for the employment they created through trainings. Therefore, training institutes offer trainings that are in high demand in the domestic market, he added.

The Employment Fund, executed by Helvetas Nepal, has covered 62 districts across the country. It focuses on ethnic people, women and Dalits residing in remote villages. According to the study, people trained through the fund have been earning around Rs 8,933 per month and they are saving around Rs 59,751 annually.

A majority of the people we train do not seek foreign employment as they are able to find jobs in the country, said information officer at the fund Komal Bhatta. “Just three per cent of the people have joined foreign jobs in the last four years,” he said, “About 43 per cent are self-employed.”

The fund has been providing training to males aged between 16-35 years and to women up to 40 years. It is planning to provide job-oriented trainings to 15,000 Nepalis in 2013.
